First night with a puppy
On the first night, put the crate next to your bed, do the last trip out around 10pm, and set an alarm for about three hours later for one quiet trip outside. Most eight-week-olds cry for a while; a hand by the crate settles them faster than leaving them to it.
What time to set the alarm tonight
The same overnight figure the night potty training page and the schedule maker use. It is an average across puppies; the app learns your own puppy's night from what you log.
The first night, hour by hour
| Time | What to do |
|---|---|
| 18:00 | Last meal of the day. Feeding later than this usually means a trip in the small hours. |
| 18:30 | Out to the potty spot, then a short, gentle play. |
| 19:00–21:00 | Quiet time on the floor with you. A nap now is fine — wake them for the last trip, not the other way round. |
| 21:00 | Take water up. Small sips if they are clearly thirsty. |
| 21:45 | Calm, low lights. No chase games, no new visitors. |
| 22:00 | Last trip out to the same spot. Wait, praise, straight back in. |
| 22:10 | Into the crate beside your bed with a blanket that smells of the litter, if the breeder gave you one. |
| About 1:00 | Alarm. Carry them out, no talking, no play, back to the crate. Lights stay off. |
| About 4:00 | Only if they wake and fuss. Many eight-week-olds need a second trip on night one. |
| 6:00–6:30 | Straight out the moment they wake, before coffee. Waking is the strongest potty signal there is. |
Where the puppy should sleep
In a crate or pen next to your bed, at least for the first week or two. A puppy who has just left their litter has never slept alone. Being able to hear and smell you is what lets them settle, and you will hear the restless shuffle that means they need to go before it turns into an accident. Once nights are calm, move the crate a little further each few nights if you want it somewhere else.
When the puppy cries
Expect some. It is a baby animal in a strange place, not a training problem yet. What helps on the first night:
- A hand or fingers at the crate door and a quiet voice. Calm, not chatty.
- Check the obvious once. If it has been a couple of hours since the last trip, a silent trip out is often the whole answer.
- Do not bring them into bed to stop it unless that is where you want them sleeping for the next year.
- Do not shout or bang the crate. It teaches the crate is where scary things happen.
Most puppies cry less every night. If yours is still crying for long stretches after the first week, the crate training schedule covers building up crate time during the day, which is what usually fixes the nights.
A first-night checklist
- Crate or pen set up next to the bed, with a blanket and a safe chew.
- Potty spot chosen, and a torch by the door.
- Alarm set (use the calculator above).
- Enzyme cleaner within reach, just in case.
- Everyone in the house agreed: no play at night trips.
The full list of what to have ready is on the new puppy checklist, and the rest of the week is on your first week with a new puppy.
Questions people ask
Where should a puppy sleep on the first night?
In a crate or pen right next to your bed. A puppy who has just left the litter settles far faster when they can hear and smell you, and you will hear the restless shuffle that means they need to go out.
Should I let my puppy cry it out on the first night?
Not on the first night. A hand at the crate door and a calm voice settle most puppies. If it has been a couple of hours since the last trip, take them out silently first. Ignoring all crying on night one mostly teaches the crate is lonely.
What time should I put my puppy to bed on the first night?
Around your own bedtime, after a last trip out at about 10pm. Putting a puppy to bed at 8pm usually means a 3am wake-up for the day.
How many times will a puppy wake on the first night?
An eight-week-old usually needs one planned trip about three hours after bedtime, and sometimes a second one. Set an alarm for the first so it is quiet and on your terms.
Should I take water away at night?
Most people take the water bowl up about an hour before the last trip out and offer small sips if the puppy is clearly thirsty. During the day, water should always be available.
Should I play with my puppy during a night potty trip?
No. Lights low, carry them straight out, wait, praise quietly, and straight back to the crate. A night trip with play teaches that the middle of the night is a good time to be awake.
