A 12-week-old puppy schedule
At twelve weeks most puppies can manage about 80 minutes between potty breaks while awake, sleep a little less, and — this is the part nobody warns you about — get noticeably harder to live with.
The day
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 6:30 | Wake, straight out. |
| 7:00 | Breakfast, then out about 25 minutes later. |
| 8:00 | Walk. Longer than at eight weeks, but still short — this is about sniffing, not distance. |
| 9:00 | Nap. Still non-negotiable. |
| 10:30–12:30 | Awake block, out roughly every 80 minutes. Good window for a training session of five minutes, no longer. |
| 12:30 | Lunch, then out. |
| 13:00–17:00 | Naps and awake blocks. One socialization item, then rest. |
| 17:30 | Second walk. |
| 18:00 | Dinner, then out. |
| 19:00–21:30 | Settle time. Chews, not chase games. |
| 22:00 | Last trip out, bed. |
| Overnight | Often no trip now. See night potty training. |
Compared with the first week home: gaps go from about an hour to about eighty minutes, two or three naps drop out of the day, and the puppy starts having opinions.
The three things that get harder
Teething. Adult teeth start moving around now and everything goes in the mouth. This is a physical need, not defiance. Frozen things to chew help; telling them off does not.
Testing. Around twelve weeks a puppy who came when called every time last week starts considering their options. This is normal development, and the worst response is to call repeatedly in a voice that gets sharper — that teaches the recall means something unpleasant is coming.
The confidence dip. Many puppies hit a wobbly patch where things they were fine with last week are suddenly alarming. Add distance, do not push through it, and it usually passes in a week or two.
These three arriving together is why twelve weeks is when people conclude the training stopped working. It did not. The puppy changed.
Potty training at this age
Twelve weeks is also the classic moment for a regression — usually because the puppy earned more of the house right as the schedule got looser. Longer gaps are a capacity, not a target.
Puppy Routine is not veterinary advice, and neither is this page. Anything about your puppy's health or a behaviour that worries you is a conversation with a veterinarian or a qualified, reward-based behaviour professional.
What the app does differently by now
By twelve weeks a puppy who has been logged for a few weeks has enough history that Puppy Routine has stopped using averages entirely — it predicts from your own dog's gaps between waking and going, eating and going. The schedule above is what a table says; the app's version is what your puppy actually does.
