6 month old puppy schedule

At six months most puppies eat two meals a day, can go about three hours between potty trips while awake, and sleep through the night. They are also entering adolescence, which is when good habits get tested hardest.

The day

Times assume you get up at 6:30 and go to bed at 10pm.

TimeWhat happens
6:30Wake, straight outside.
7:00Breakfast, then outside about 25 minutes later.
7:30Main walk. Sniffing, a little training, some free running where it is safe.
9:00–12:00Rest. A puppy this age still sleeps a lot, just in bigger blocks.
12:00Midday trip out and a short play or training session.
15:00Trip out. A chew or a food puzzle for the afternoon.
17:30Second walk.
19:00Dinner, three hours before bed, then outside.
22:00Last trip out, then bed.
OvernightMost six-month-olds sleep through. A puppy still waking at night is worth mentioning to your vet.

What changes at six months

Two meals. Most puppies move from three meals to two around six months. Some leave food in the bowl for a week or so first. When to switch to adult food depends on size; the feeding page lists the usual ages.

Adolescence. Recall gets selective, pulling on the lead gets worse, and things the puppy seemed to know go missing. This is development, not failure. Go back to easier versions of each skill and keep sessions short.

More energy, same need for sleep. A six-month-old can do more exercise, but most still need 14 to 16 hours of sleep. An over-tired teenager behaves like a much younger puppy.

Growth slows down. Small breeds are close to their adult size by now; large and giant breeds have a long way to go. The puppy weight chart shows how far along a typical puppy of each size is.

Questions people ask

How often should a 6-month-old puppy go out?

About every three hours while awake, plus after waking, after meals and after play. Many go a little longer, but three hours is a safe plan for the day.

How many times a day should a 6-month-old puppy eat?

Twice a day is typical from about six months. Large and giant breeds stay on puppy food for longer, but the meal count is the same.

Do 6-month-old puppies sleep through the night?

Most do. A six-month-old asleep can hold it for six to seven hours, and with a late last trip that covers a normal night. Waking every night at this age is worth asking your vet about.

Why has my 6-month-old puppy stopped listening?

Adolescence. Around six months many puppies test recall, pull harder on the lead and seem to forget known cues. Go back to easier versions, use better rewards and keep sessions short. It passes.

How much does a 6-month-old puppy sleep?

Usually 14 to 16 hours a day, in fewer, longer blocks than before. An over-tired adolescent often behaves badly; more rest often fixes it.
