5 month old puppy schedule
At five months (about 22 weeks) most puppies eat three meals a day, need a potty trip about every two and a half hours while awake, and sleep through the night. Adult teeth are mostly through, energy is up, and the first signs of adolescence start to show.
The day
Times assume you get up at 6:30 and go to bed at 10pm.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 6:30 | Wake, straight outside. |
| 7:00 | Breakfast, then outside about 25 minutes later. |
| 7:45 | Walk — sniffing and exploring more than distance. |
| 8:30–12:30 | Nap, then an awake block with a five-to-ten-minute training session. Out about every two and a half hours. |
| 13:00 | Lunch, then outside. |
| 13:30–18:30 | Nap, play, a second walk. A calm new place or a friendly dog is a good use of this block. |
| 19:00 | Dinner, three hours before bed, then outside. |
| 19:30–21:45 | Settle time: chews, a lick mat, gentle handling. |
| 22:00 | Last trip out, then bed. |
| Overnight | Most sleep through. A five-month-old asleep can usually hold about six hours. |
Build it around your own day
Your dog's own two numbers
Everything above runs on averages. The two figures that actually decide your week are how long your puppy takes after waking and after eating — and those are facts about one dog, not about puppies. If you have watched closely enough to know them, put them in and the whole day above rebuilds around them.
Blank means "not yet", which is the honest answer in week one. Finding these two numbers takes a couple of weeks of watching what actually follows every nap and every meal — and noticing it at 3am, on the fourth night, is exactly when nobody is watching. That watching is the whole job the app does.
What changes at five months
Longer gaps. Daytime trips stretch to about two and a half hours — up from about two at four months. Bigger gaps are also when accidents creep back, so watch the hour after play.
Still three meals. Most puppies stay on three meals until about six months. The feeding schedule spaces them around your day.
More energy, shorter attention. Training sessions can be a bit longer, but stop while it is still going well. The six-month schedule covers adolescence, which often starts showing now.
Longer crate and alone time. Daytime stretches of three to four hours are often fine by now — the crate schedule has the numbers, and the working full time page covers the workday.

Questions people ask
How often should a 5-month-old puppy go out?
About every two and a half hours while awake, plus after waking, about 25 minutes after meals and after play. Watch the hour after play most closely.
How many times a day should a 5-month-old puppy eat?
Three meals is typical until about six months. For a 6:30am wake-up and a 10pm bedtime that is about 7am, 1pm and 7pm.
Can a 5-month-old puppy sleep through the night?
Most can. A five-month-old asleep can usually hold it for about six hours, so with a late last trip a normal night is covered.
How long can a 5-month-old puppy be left alone?
Around three to four hours in the daytime is a common guide, built up gradually. Longer workdays still need a midday break.
How much exercise does a 5-month-old puppy need?
Two or three short walks a day plus play and training. Sniffing and exploring tire a puppy more than distance, and long runs can wait until growth has finished.
How much should a 5-month-old puppy sleep?
Usually around 15 to 17 hours in 24, in fewer, longer naps than before. Plenty of rest keeps the biting and zoomies down.
